OUR MISSION & HISTORY
The New Jersey Law Enforcement Youth Academy prepares the next generation of law enforcement professionals through an intensive, academy-style experience.
Re-Formed 13 years ago, the program brings together young men and women from towns across the state for a week of training and personal growth.
What started as a way to give young people a taste of police academy life has grown into a statewide tradition.
NJLEYA Trainees have been proud participants, gaining skills and confidence that last a lifetime. Led by a dedicated team of law enforcement professionals.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
A six-day residential program held at a local university.
Participants live on campus, follow a structured daily schedule, and train alongside peers from departments statewide.

THE FOUR “PHASES” AT THE ACADEMY
Phase 1: First year trainees; they receive a mix of classroom training and hands on experience.
Phase 2: Classroom refresher with graded practical exercises.
Phase 3: Academy Police, patrolling campus and answering calls for service over the radio from a dispatcher.
Phase 4: Public Speaking, Interview Techniques and Resume building. Culminates with a job interview from actual Chiefs of police.

DAILY ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:
- Close Order Drills - Self Defense Techniques - Criminal and Motor Vehicle Law - Crime Scene Investigations
- Leadership Development - Radio Communications - CPR and First Aid.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
By the end of the week, NJLEYA Trainees walk away with practical skills, a deeper understanding of what it takes to serve in law enforcement, and the confidence to lead.

ELIGIBILITY & WHO WE SERVE
